Children walking with lanterns
Every year, Friends of Fellsmere Heights invites residents of Malden and Medford to make lanterns and carry them at dusk around Fellsmere Pond. This year's Walk will be Saturday, August 24 (Rain date: Sunday, August 25), at the Savin Street entrance to Fellsmere Park. Folks are invited to arrive any time from from 4:30 PM on. The Walk will start shortly after 7 PM.
This year will be a little different. Instead of covering the bottoms of soda bottles with tissue paper, we will have pre-papered lanterns for people to color. We'll also have lots of lanterns made in previous years, ready for those who just want to pick up a lantern and join the procession. You can bring a lantern from a previous year, or you can bring a plain plastic bottle from home.
Another change is that we're going to use LED light strings instead of candles, both to save time and for safety reasons. These light strings use LR44 batteries, which are readily available and can be replaced using a small screwdriver. We'll have both white and multi-colored lights. As you can see, even a plain bottle makes an exciting lantern using these!

Other activities will be provided, and you're always welcome to bring a chair or blanket, or a picnic supper. We recommend bug spray and sunscreen. Water will be available.
VOLUNTEERS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME! Please contact us at [email protected] if you'd like to help us set things up, take things down, or help with coloring lanterns, fixing handles, or installing light strings. RSVPs are appreciated. We hope to see you there!
